See the World from a Traveler’s Perspective

We live in a splendid world with endless possibilities. The gradually accumulated understanding of the world makes life's breadth increasingly wider. However, being able to see the world is not easy. Limited by the scope of action, most human beings only know the limited place where they live, but know little about this beautiful world.

There is the peak 8000 meters high, the trench 10,000 meters deep, the magnificent and ancient ruins, the mysterious and lush rain forest, the rich land with hungry children, and the poor desert with tall buildings; these all exist in the same world, but we know little about them.

There are many ways to get to know the world: reading books, watching video materials, listening to other people's chats..., but none is better than the immersive learning. Fortunately, with the overall development of China, China’s outbound tourists exceeded 140 million in 2018, and more and more Chinese people have stepped out of China.

Going out to travel is the best way to know the world, but going out does not mean you can truly "see the world". The world will show you from the same perspective as you see it.

For some people, their trips are more like the "exhibition of SLR camera" or the "seminar of self-portrait pose". They think it is more meaningful to show off than to feel the impact of a strange land. There are also some people who are late by car and refund tickets at attractions. The so-called travel means continuing to play electronic devices in another place. In the name of travel, they see the world through smartphones.

There are still some people who see the world negatively during travel: the New York subway is not as good as that of my hometown; the Korean diet is really simple, far behind the morning tea of my hometown; it is better to go to the "miniature world park" to save time and effort... Those people can’t see the world, and the world only sees his arrogance and prejudice.

Then, what perspective should we use to see the world? What attitude should we hold to see the world?

Here is the preface of the famous US magazine Life in 1936:

“To see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events; to watch the faces of the poor and the gestures of the proud; to see strange things — machines, armies, multitudes, shadows in the jungle and on the moon; to see man’s work — his paintings, towers and discoveries; to see things thousands of miles away, things hidden behind walls and within rooms, things dangerous to come to; the women that men love and many children; to see and take pleasure in seeing; to see and be amazed; to see and be instructed...”

I think this is the proper attitude with which we should see the world. It is between the onlooker and the witness – the traveler.

Among the people who go out to travel, there are many tourists, but few travelers. The biggest difference between the two is whether they are changed by travel. The tourist gives a hurried and cursory glance at the scenery but takes a long time to take photos; the traveler walks slowly and gradually absorbs the local culture and customs. The traveler may not take photos, but will still recall the thrilling beauty years later. The tourist does not change himself/herself because of a travel; the traveler, however, takes learning and growth as a way of traveling, and is ultimately changed by travel willingly.

Every time people travel to a strange city or country, the traveling way with the purpose of learning and growth can help people build or improve their thinking patterns in their brains. In strange land, you must integrate into the real society of the local people. Children need to get in touch with the locals, experience their way of life, use their means of transportation, and visit their museums. Do not skim the surface, but stay there and seriously admire them. Only by fully engaging with the local society can we truly appreciate the diversity and charm of culture.

Only when the world we see is big enough, can we be more tolerant and open. In fact, accepting and respecting others' differences has become the focus of "knowing the world.”

Traveling not only allows us to see the diversity of the world, know the world, and increase the breadth of our life, but also to know ourselves. When a person is in an unfamiliar environment, his strengths and weaknesses will be clear, which undoubtedly allows us to know ourselves.

In 2019, Shenmo pushed forward the program of "going out to see the world", and encourages more Shenmo people to go abroad to see the world, so as to enhance the connotation level of Shenmo, promote individual growth and career development, appreciate the exotic atmosphere from the perspective of the travelers, feel different cultures, and promote the self-growth and upgrading. As the preface of Life: “to see and take pleasure in seeing; to see and be amazed; to see and be instructed...”
